Marlborough (South Island NZ)
1/14/07
We are staying with one of Liz's friends, Dunkin and his family. They have a little room off the garage that Colleen and I are staying in and it is SO cute!
Today Dunkin took us on a tour of the area known as the Marlborough Sound. I took hundreds of pictures as every switchback along the coast was more amazing than the last.
We stopped and took a couple of treks along the way - and had a bit of fun as well:)
The first was down to a beach called Govenor's Bay where some crazy ducks kept coming right up to us. I hiked, waded, and bouldered out to a little island and got some crazy pics and found a little starfish!
Afterward to headed to a suspension bridge - where Dunkin and I kept jumping and making it swing...the other girls were not too keen on it, but we thought it quite fun!
Then Dunkin showed me a plant that you can eat when out in the bush. It is the curly top of a fern that looked like a slimely green caterpillar, but was quite tasty. I also tried the sap of a tree!
As we hiked through the forest we decided to pose as Lord of the Rings characters (as it was filmed in New Zealand)
Liz = Princess Aerowin - we fashioned a crown out of ferns for her
Colleen = Frodo - we found a cave like area in the brush for her
Dunkin = Aragon - we made a sword out of tree branches for him
Tracy = Legolis (yeah, I got to be Orlando Bloom) - we made a pointy ear out of a leaf and a bow and arrow out of twigs for me
On the way back to Dunkin's house we stopped at some wineries along the way - as this area is famous for its wines. We stopped at Nautilus and Forrest. At Forrest we were able to choose 6 glasses of wine out of the 15 they had available to sample (for only $5!) and they were all delicious (of course I picked all sweet whites!) My favorites were 2005 Late Harvest Riesling and 2005 Botrytised Riesling.
Once back at Dunkin's we played a riveting game of Crocket...I was kicking booty in the beginning, but then ended up coming in dead last!
(I think the one on the right kinda looks like an album cover! Maybe we should start a band?!?
