Fox Glacier, New Zealand

1/18/07

On our drive to Fox Glacier we stopped for a potty break and came across some helicopters...we already had a flight booked once we got to the glacier, but I was persuaded to splurge on another copter ride...and was I glad I did...cause by the time we got to Fox Glacier, all flights had been canceled due to low lying clouds! What a stroke of luck!

The ladies and I decided we still wanted to hike the glacier and booked an excursion. We strapped on our clamp-ons and headed up the glacier with our guide...a cute, very kiwi, very shy tour guide. We ended up hitting it off quite nicely (despite the efforts of some other ladies on the trek) and I learned a TON about the glacier. One of the most interesting thing I learned is that despite global warming, these glaciers are actually growing. They use moisture from Melbourne Australia and you can actually see the dust from the outback in the ice!!!

We ended up meeting G, his friend Jeremy, and their friend Tom at the Saddle Bar that night. We played pool, laughed, danced like crazies, and took pics with the random John Wayne cut-out in the bar.
