Tongariro and Lake Taupo, New Zealand
1/25/07
This was an early morning for us as we had to have the rental car returned and be at the ferry at 5am! All of us slept on the ferry the whole way back to Wellington, which prepared us for our next adventure - Tongariro.
This was part of the trip I was REALLY looking forward to as the hikes are supposed to be some of the most amazing in New Zealand...but, our trip took way too long and we didn't have time to do the trek I really wanted so we settled for a 2 hour trek that was fun, but not nearly as majestic. It was rather eerie with land stretching forever, ominous skies, muted colors and cold cascading water falls.
Next stop was Lake Taupo - the largest fresh water lake in NZ or Australia. The lake itself is too vast to capture in photos. It actually used to be a volcano until it erupted and caved in creating a monstrous lake! The force it would have taken to change the landscape that drastically - UNBELIEVABLE! But we did get to see a killer sunset...
The hostel we checked into in Taupo was sketchy...probably one of the grossest I have stayed in EVER! Colleen found stalagtite style dust bunnies under the dresser...
The place made funny noises...that kinda creeped us out...
And the hallways...well....
Luckily we were so exhausted from the early morning that we laid out our self-brought blankets, didn't touch anything or dare shower, and passed out til the next morning when we promptly left at daybreak for a nice breakfast.
