Catlins & Dunedin, New Zealand

1/21/07

The worst day of the trip. We drove and drove...

and drove and drove...

and drove out of our way to go to a place called the Catlins, which wasn't in our original plan, and definitely was not worth our time.

The closer we got, the more it rained, I got car sick, we got lost, and it wasn't nearly as amazing as anything else we had seen, but we still managed to make the best of it! The driving did provide for some interesting convos, pictures, and adventures...lots of random stops along the way...

Like when we stopped to buy horse poo...well, not really, but the option was there

Or when we stopped to pick up a pair of shoes...or leave ours behind?

Or when I sat on the bench and broke it!!!

(it was already broken, but pretty convincing - right?!?)

Or to stop at the GIANT fruit stand...why not, we have Giant Cheese Stands in Wisconsin and Giant Pineapple Plantations in Hawaii...kinda felt like home!

Or when we just stopped to enjoy the scenery and absorb the blue sky and sun!

The other downside, besides the rain in the Catlins is that once we finally got there, we tried to see Albatross, but didn't...

we tried to see penguins, but didn't...

By the time we made it to our destination I was so tired of being in the car I could have screamed...or, maybe I did!

We did end up staying in a rather quaint town called Dunedin, just outside the Catlins. It is somewhat of a cross between the quaint little coffee shops and stores found in Madison, WI and the crazy steep hills of San Francisco, CA
